Welcome to Monbusho (Monbukagakusho) Scholars Homepage FOKS Japanese Dictionary Service. ("FOKS" stands for Forgiving Online Kanji Search. It is a Japanese dictionary project that was deleveloped by a Monbusho Scholar - a member of our page!!)

We decided (with the generous support of the developer) to integrate the FOKS dictionary into our page for the following reasons:

It is DIFFERENT from other online Japanese dictionaries in that you can search for the reading of Kanji or any word just by pasting it in, and searching. Or, on the other hand, you can type in a word in Hiragana to find the Appropriate Kanji for that word, with English translations.

FOKS system is a dictionary interface aimed at learners of Japanese language. Have you ever wanted to lookup a word that you could "almost" read but the reading was slightly different from what you expected it to be? If so, FOKS should prove useful. FOKS tries to build on this intuition and allow you to lookup words based (even) on the incorrect reading. Just enter the reading you think is correct and the system will calculate which of the available dictionary entries could take this reading. From the list of candidates you can click on the desired entry to obtain the translation.
